Story of the network
In
the World:
The roots of the youth hostel movement trace back to the
20th century, when there occured a youth liberation movement
in germany reacting against bourgeois customs. Lead by
Karl Fisher, young germans, who called themselves “wandervogel”
, or “migratory birds”, provided the seeds
of the spirit of hostelling which a teacher named Richard
Schirman made into fruit on the evening of august 26,
1909, when the idea occured to him to take advantege of
schools to house students on field trips. Later that same
year, in the south german city of attena, the first youth
hostel openned. Operating still to the present day. Currently
there are more than 4,500 youth hostels throughout the
world.
In
Brazil:
It was also a teacher, joaquim trotta, who was responsible
for introducing the hostel movement to brazil, founding
in 1965 the “Residência Ramos” in Rio
de Janeiro, the first brazilian youth hostel. Today, there
are approximately 70 youth hostels in the main brazilian
